Freedom?

April 26, 2007

Did anyone else feel that today was kind of weird?

It was a beautiful day where I am - but strangely quiet!

The phone rang very little. There were hardly any emails. Even Mammy's Kitchen was unusually quiet!

I was wondering if the rest of world had simply taken the day off to enjoy the good weather!

Because it was such an interrupted day I managed to accomplish quite a bit - which is very good!

At one point, I even got to sit in the sun and read for a bit! That doesn't happen very often on a week day!

I probably got a little too laid back!

I was supposed to go to a website launch at 6pm followed by a talk on Search Engine Optimisation, whatever that is when it's at home!

To get there, I would have had to be all dressed and ready to leave home by 5pm to drive across the city.

As the afternoon slipped by, the prospect became less and less appealing, so I decided not to go!

I have become so comfortable working from home and not having to make any effort at all that I am only one step away from never getting dressed up again!

I could live forever in big t-shirts and baggy pants and flip-flops!

Thankfully, to stop me slipping into total and irreversible slobdom. I do occasionally have to make my way to the city and meet real flesh and blood people.

And that got me thinking about how much of what we do, we do for ourselves and how much of it is for other people?

For instance, I don't think I would cook dinner every day if I lived alone.

I'm already getting away (most days) with the minimum of attention to my physical appearance.

I walk marathons for charity because it's the only way I'll do any exercise! (Although, since I discovered Tai Chi that has changed a bit!)

So, what would you do if you didn't have to do anything?

If you didn't have to work and there was nobody relying on you for anything, what would be different about your life?

How would we cope with that much freedom?
